THE HUMAN HYBRIDS
RMIT GRADUATE COLLECTION (2023)
Lightyears away from our planet Earth, a hybrid alien species was created as a result of mixing human and extra-terrestrial genes together. The mutation appears human like however having unnaturally long fingers...
The Human Hybrids is a collection created from my own interpretation of what this imagined alien species could look like and what could resemble fashion in their foreign society. My interpretation of this species follows no precedents as no one knows what an alien looks like as there is no solid evidence available. Instead, I have been exploring the relationship between how silhouettes, fabrics, textures, and colour combinations can be perceived as alien and how fashion in different worlds don’t need to be categorised by genders.
This collection is classified as a fusion of premium street and luxury ready to wear garments, where core pieces such as leggings, bodysuits and long sleeve tops are combined with focal garments that feature gathering, ruffles, and tulle. Taking inspiration from Comme des Garcons Spring 2005 Collection, each look is a mix and match of colours, prints and textures, creating an unlikely, quirky combination that doesn’t make sense on our planet, but is the perfect blend for these hybrids.
The Human Hybrid collection consists of a variety of woven fabrics such as organza, chiffon, tulle, and satin that are combined with stretch fabrics like stretch mesh, recycled polyester and nylon blends. These fabrics were carefully picked to match the strong, vibrant colour pallet and the exclusive prints that span across 6 intriguing looks.
